Rafa Benitez joins Panathinaikos as Greece’s highest paid coach after signing a record £3.47m deal to revive the club’s league ambitions

Rafa Benitez Panathinaikos partnership is set to mark a new chapter in Greek football as the Spanish manager prepares to take charge at the Athens-based club, becoming the highest paid coach in the country’s history.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss will sign a two-year contract worth £3.47 million, a record-breaking deal that underscores Panathinaikos’ ambition to reclaim their long-lost domestic dominance.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Benitez reached the agreement after meeting club president Giannis Alafouzos in London earlier this week.

The contract reportedly positions him as one of the most financially rewarded managers in southern Europe.

Panathinaikos currently sit seventh in the Greek Super League, with nine points from six matches, trailing leaders PAOK by eight points, though they have a game in hand.

The move represents a powerful comeback for Benitez, who has been without a managerial post since March last year, when he was dismissed by Celta Vigo after a disappointing spell in La Liga.

For Panathinaikos, the appointment signals a clear intent to restore their reputation. The club last won the league title in 2010, and have lifted it only twice this century, despite their rich history and passionate fan base.

Benitez, known for his tactical discipline and European pedigree, is expected to inject a fresh strategic edge into the squad, blending structure with attacking flair to challenge the dominance of rivals Olympiacos and PAOK.

The 64-year-old Spaniard brings decades of top-level experience, having previously managed Valencia, Napoli, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Inter Milan, along with Real Madrid and Liverpool, where he famously won the 2005 UEFA Champions League.

His arrival has generated a wave of optimism in Athens, with supporters hopeful that his expertise will restore the club’s competitive spirit and reawaken Panathinaikos’ golden era.
