Zico names Okocha greatest African footballer, praising the Nigerian’s flair and creativity during an interview on Mikel Obi’s Obi One Podcast

The Brazilian football icon made the statement during his appearance on the Obi One Podcast hosted by former Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel, on Thursday.

Widely respected as one of the greatest attacking midfielders of all time, Zico’s recognition of Okocha as his top African player carries significant weight in global football discourse.

“I like Okocha, a fantastic player. Number 10, Okocha,” Zico said during the conversation. “Eto’o, fantastic. George Weah, Drogba,” he added, listing other notable African stars.

However, it was clear Okocha held a special place in his assessment — praised for a playing style defined by flair, improvisation, and technical brilliance.

Zico names Okocha greatest African footballer not just for his natural skill, but for the influence and showmanship that made the Nigerian playmaker stand out in every team he represented — from Paris Saint-Germain and Fenerbahçe to the Bolton Wanderers in England, and most famously, the Nigerian national team.
