Delta students debate championship reward sees N20m gifted to each winner by Gov. Oborevwori for victory at World Basic Schools Debate in Qatar

Delta students debate championship reward made headlines Thursday as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori announced a N20 million cash prize for each member of the five-student team that won the 2025 World Basic Schools Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar.

The same amount was also awarded to each of the team’s handlers, marking one of the largest educational incentive packages ever granted in Delta State.

Receiving the students, their parents, and education officials at the Government House, Asaba, Governor Oborevwori praised the young champions for elevating Nigeria and Delta on the global stage.

“Delta State is known not only for oil and entertainment but also for brilliance in education,” he said. “I believe this gesture will inspire our youths to pursue excellence in their studies.”

Describing the win as a proud milestone, Oborevwori emphasized that his administration remains committed to academic excellence. He noted that diligence, discipline, and focus, as shown by the debate team, are key to building a better society.

He also thanked the parents, coaches, and handlers for their support in shaping the students’ success.

“Education is the most valuable legacy parents can give their children,” the governor stated.

Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr. Samuel Mariere, lauded the governor for his unwavering support of education.

He also highlighted the prompt payment of the 2025 counterpart fund for UBEC-SUBEB projects as a testament to the governor’s priority on learning infrastructure.

Speaking on behalf of the winning team, Splendour Ikhamateh of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba, expressed gratitude to the governor and people of Delta State. She shared that the students debated topics such as climate change, youth empowerment, and responsible technology use.

“We faced doubts, but we drew strength from the spirit of Delta,” she said, drawing applause.
