Kano voter registration ranking drops to 18th, raising concerns as officials push to boost turnout ahead of 2027 elections

Kano voter registration ranking has sparked alarm after the state placed 18th among Nigeria’s 36 states in the ongoing online voter registration exercise.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a meeting with the Voter Registration Awareness Committee and members of the Kwankwasiyya writers and musicians association on Wednesday.

According to Waiya, early figures showed that about 5,000 residents had begun the online registration process.

However, updated numbers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) revealed that while 1,379,342 Nigerians had registered nationwide, only 10,000 were from Kano.

“This is disturbing because Kano, as the most populous state, is expected to lead in voter registration,” Waiya lamented.

He emphasized the need for urgent mobilization, noting that while Kano currently has six million registered voters, the government is targeting 10 million before the 2027 general elections.

The Commissioner urged community groups, artists, and civic organizations to join forces in sensitizing residents, stressing that robust participation in voter registration is vital for the state’s political influence at the national level.
