The fatal attack occurred over the weekend on Igun Street, Benin City, where Derrick had gone to buy spare parts for his vehicle. Witnesses said the armed men confronted him and demanded his gold necklace, reportedly valued at ₦50 million.

When Derrick allegedly resisted, one of the gunmen pulled a pump-action gun from their Lexus SUV and shot him twice in the leg before seizing the jewellery and fleeing the scene.

Bystanders rushed the victim to hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Eyewitnesses believe the assailants may have trailed him before carrying out the attack. “I suspect the victim was followed to Igun. His reply to the demand for the necklace appeared to anger the gunmen, leading to the fatal shooting,” one source said.

The Edo police have pledged to intensify efforts to track down those responsible for the killing, which has caused fear and outrage in the community.
