Micky van de Ven’s brilliant solo goal led Tottenham to a 4–0 Champions League win over Copenhagen, easing tensions with boss Thomas Frank

Micky van de Ven produced a sensational solo goal as Tottenham Hotspur crushed Copenhagen 4–0 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, marking a perfect response to recent criticism and a return to winning form in Europe.

The Dutch defender, who was forced to apologise to manager Thomas Frank after ignoring fans following Saturday’s Premier League loss to Chelsea, made amends in spectacular fashion.

Sprinting from his own half, Van de Ven weaved through defenders before firing past Dominik Kotarski — a goal already being hailed as one of the finest of the tournament.

By the time Van de Ven struck in the 64th minute, Spurs were already two goals ahead thanks to first-half efforts from Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert.

Johnson, who ended a nine-game goal drought, capitalised on a defensive blunder by Kotarski in the 19th minute.

The Welshman calmly rolled the ball into an empty net after the goalkeeper’s misjudged charge outside the area.

Tottenham’s dominance continued after the restart when Randal Kolo Muani intercepted another wayward Kotarski clearance and teed up Odobert for an easy finish.

However, Johnson’s evening ended prematurely when a VAR review upgraded his yellow card to red for a reckless challenge on Marcos Lopez in the 55th minute.

Despite being a man down, Frank’s side remained in complete control.

Van de Ven’s dazzling solo run — gliding past two defenders before drilling home a low strike — brought fans to their feet.

The defender then cupped his ear toward the stands, a gesture of reconciliation after the weekend’s controversy, before being embraced by teammates.

Three minutes later, Joao Palhinha added a fourth with a composed finish from close range, sealing Tottenham’s most emphatic victory of the campaign.

Substitute Richarlison missed a late penalty that would have made it five.

The win extends Tottenham’s unbeaten Champions League run to four games (two wins, two draws) and lifts them closer to knockout qualification.

For manager Thomas Frank, it was a welcome reprieve after questions over his conservative tactics. “That’s the Tottenham way — attacking, brave, together,” he said post-match.
