LASEPA reports 3,300 noise complaints in 2025, leads enforcement on pollution, sewage discharge, and chemical hazards across Lagos State

Noise pollution was the leading environmental complaint in Lagos State in 2025, according to the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, accounting for 3,300 of 8,437 complaints recorded statewide.

Dr Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, disclosed the figures during the agency’s Annual Performance Appraisal and Media Parley in Ikeja.

He said the agency shut down 244 facilities, including hotels, churches, mosques, and warehouses, for violations of environmental laws between January and December 2025.

Ajayi highlighted that enforcement operations across households, markets, service centres, and worship centres also included monitoring over 200 hospitality facilities and issuing 180 abatement notices for raw sewage discharge and land and water pollution.

Joint operations at Ojota Chemical Market with NESREA helped reduce chemical spillages and fire outbreaks in industrial facilities. Additionally, LASEPA installed two smokeless kiln machines at the Ago-Egun Ilaje fishing community to improve air quality and protect women’s health.

On air quality, Ajayi said 114 low-cost air monitors were deployed, with weekly data released publicly, and 60 additional monitors ready for installation, targeting 200 by the end of 2026.

Many noise complaints were resolved without sealing premises, he noted, stressing that prevention reduces health costs. “For every one naira spent on environmental protection, about ₦40 is saved from sickness management,” he said.

Agreements under the Noiseless Lagos Advocacy were signed with religious leaders and nightclub operators to curb excessive noise.

Ajayi added that LASEPA combined enforcement with education through a compliance desk, collaborated with the Ministry of Health on water testing to prevent cholera, and accredited 153 e-waste and battery recyclers to curb unsafe disposal.

He revealed that around 25 per cent of reported diseases in Lagos health facilities were environment-related.

The GM emphasised boosting interagency partnerships in 2026 to safeguard residents, while expressing gratitude to the governor for investing in the agency’s laboratories and operational capacity.
