The Round 7 encounter was marked by Chelsea’s dominance in possession and territory, but the hosts were repeatedly frustrated by resolute defending and an inspired performance from Pafos goalkeeper Jay Gorter.

Chelsea believed they had broken the deadlock in the 18th minute when Enzo Fernandez found the net, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for an infringement in the build-up.

Undeterred, Mauricio Pochettino’s side maintained sustained pressure, creating a succession of chances through Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho.

However, Gorter produced a series of outstanding saves, while Pafos defenders made crucial last-ditch interventions to keep the contest level.

The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute. Moises Caicedo reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the six-yard area, nodding a close-range header inside the left post to give Chelsea a deserved lead.

Pafos, coached by former Spain international Albert Celades, pushed forward in search of a late equaliser and came close in stoppage time when Landry Dimata fired goalward. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, however, made a superb save to preserve the clean sheet.
