Kanu, Okocha, Amokachi and other African football legends to play in African Legends match in Abuja on March 28, promoting culture and grassroots empowerment

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has confirmed that he will feature alongside Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George and other African football legends in the African Legends United Gala Match scheduled for March 28, 2026, in Abuja.

Kanu made the announcement on Thursday at the African Continental Free Trade Area Festival in Abuja, noting that the event is designed to promote African culture and empower grassroots communities.

“It’s happening in Nigeria and the legends are going to be there. They are going to do what we normally know how to do. And then we’ll perform and everybody will enjoy it,” Kanu said.

The former Arsenal and Inter Milan striker added that the players were motivated by the opportunity to inspire young Africans and encourage unity across the continent.

“It’s legends because we are giving back as well. And that’s why we all agreed to be involved in this kind of event. So, myself, Jay Jay Okocha, Daniel Amokachi and others will participate in the match on March 28,” he said.

Former Cameroon international Eyong Enoh also spoke at the festival, confirming that the African Continental Free Trade Area Festival will run from March 26 to 28, with the legends’ match taking place on the final day at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Enoh said the initiative aims to promote unity among African nations, noting that many divisions on the continent were colonial constructs.

“The only difference between Cameroon and Nigeria is a line that was drawn colonially. I don’t see myself just as a Cameroonian. I see myself as an African,” he said.

The festival will also feature startup exhibitions, cultural showcases, and other initiatives aligned with the motto: “One Africa, One Market, One Future.”
