Christian Chukwu, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential football figures, captained the national team to its first Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 1980, a historic achievement that cemented his place in Nigerian sporting history.

He also enjoyed a successful club career with Enugu Rangers, leading the side to continental glory in 1977 before transitioning into coaching roles with Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and the Super Eagles.

Ikpeba described Chukwu as an “iconic player” and recalled watching him as a young boy, noting the depth of talent in that era alongside names such as Muda Lawal.

“In my era, you were spoiled with choices… there have been lots of great players who have worn this jersey,” Ikpeba said, referencing Nigeria’s golden generations, including the 1994 squad, the Olympic-winning team, and the 2013 AFCON champions.

However, he maintained that Chukwu stands above them all due to his leadership, influence, and historic achievements with the national team.
