Wike selfless leadership message urges Nigerian youths to prioritise service, integrity and accountability over personal gain

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has urged Nigerian youths to view leadership as a platform for service rather than personal enrichment, warning that corruption and self-interest continue to undermine national development.

Wike delivered the message during the 36th Convocation Ceremony of University of Port Harcourt, where he addressed graduating students and challenged them to become a new generation of leaders committed to integrity, accountability and public service.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s future depends on leaders who place the interests of citizens above personal gain and political ambition.

“Leadership is service. It is not an avenue for self-glorification, but a covenant with the people,” Wike told the graduates.

The former Rivers State governor said the country’s development challenges have been worsened by corruption, abuse of office and a culture of self-interest that has weakened public institutions.

He stressed that leadership should be defined by impact rather than privilege, urging young Nigerians to adopt values that promote trust and responsible governance.

“The true leader does not ask, ‘What do I gain from this office?’ but rather, ‘What do the people gain from my stewardship?’” he said.

The Wike selfless leadership message focused on the need for courage and ethical conduct among emerging leaders, particularly at a time when public confidence in institutions remains a major concern.

Wike told the graduates that leadership should be measured by the positive changes it brings to people’s lives and the strength of the institutions left behind.

He encouraged them to pursue excellence in their chosen careers while maintaining a commitment to honesty and national development.

The minister’s remarks come amid ongoing conversations about governance, transparency and leadership accountability in Nigeria, with many stakeholders calling for greater youth participation in public affairs.
