The transfer gives Delap an opportunity to revive a career that lost momentum during his solitary season at Stamford Bridge, while Forest have made a substantial investment in a forward they believe can strengthen their attack.

The initial £45 million fee surpasses Forest’s previous transfer record of £37.5 million, paid for Omari Hutchinson in 2025.

The deal could rise by a further £5 million depending on add-ons.

For Chelsea, the sale represents a sizeable financial return on a player they signed from Ipswich Town for around £30 million in 2025.

Depending on the eventual value of the deal, Chelsea could make between £15 million and £20 million on the transfer fee.

Delap’s departure comes after a frustrating first season in west London.

The England youth international struggled to establish himself as a regular under Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, making 47 appearances in all competitions but scoring only three goals, according to Reuters. His Premier League return was particularly modest.

The contrast with his previous campaign at Ipswich is striking.

Delap scored 12 Premier League goals in 37 appearances during the 2024-25 season, despite Ipswich winning only four league matches and ultimately being relegated.

His physical strength, acceleration and ability to drive forward with the ball were among the characteristics that made him effective at Ipswich.

Delap also recorded 26 shot-ending carries that season, the highest figure among Premier League strikers, underlining his ability to turn possession into attacking opportunities.

His Chelsea spell never quite produced the expected breakthrough. Injuries and inconsistent form limited his influence, while competition for places increased under Alonso.

The striker had also been told he was not part of Alonso’s plans for the new campaign and had been training separately from the main group. His squad number was reassigned, making a summer exit increasingly likely.

Forest eventually won the race for his signature after interest from other Premier League clubs, including Everton.

The move represents a calculated gamble for Forest, who finished 16th in the Premier League last season and are seeking greater attacking strength.

Delap is expected to provide competition alongside established forwards including Chris Wood and Igor Jesus.

The club had also recently allowed Taiwo Awoniyi to leave for Coventry City, creating additional space in the attacking department.

Delap is enthusiastic about the fresh start and has identified Forest manager Oliver Glasner as an important reason for choosing the club.

“This is a massive club with a big history,” Delap said, according to the reported comments.

“I spoke to the manager and I like his way. I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step.”

For Forest, that next step will need to translate into goals.

The club have committed a record fee to a player who is still only 23, reflecting both the belief in his potential and the premium attached to proven Premier League experience.

The transfer also gives Delap a chance to reset after an unusually short stay at Chelsea.

He has now moved between three clubs in three seasons, following his progression from Manchester City’s academy to Ipswich and then Stamford Bridge.

The financial details also underline how quickly his valuation has changed. Chelsea paid about £30 million for Delap only a year ago, while Forest’s package could now reach £50 million.

For Chelsea, that provides a useful profit during an extensive reshaping of their squad.

For Forest, the calculation is different: the value of the deal will ultimately depend on whether Delap can rediscover the attacking sharpness he showed at Ipswich.

There is reason for optimism, but also a clear element of risk.

Delap has already demonstrated that he can score consistently in the Premier League.

His challenge at the City Ground will be to reproduce that form in a new system and under the expectations that accompany a club-record transfer.

The move therefore offers both sides something they need. Chelsea gain financial flexibility, while Forest acquire a young striker with substantial room to recover his reputation.

For Delap himself, it may be the most important part of the deal.
