Delta Police baby rescue sees mother and couple arrested after allegedly selling a two-month-old infant for ₦1.5m; baby is safe and under care

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have rescued a two-month-old baby and arrested the mother, Rita Ughale, alongside a couple, Osas Omijie and Judith Omijie, over allegations of selling the infant for ₦1,500,000.

The announcement was made on Friday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in Warri.

According to the police statement, Ughale initially reported that her baby was kidnapped during a tricycle transit on December 15, 2025.

Investigations, however, revealed inconsistencies in her account, prompting further interrogation. The mother subsequently confessed to selling the child to the Omijie couple.

“The suspects were arrested, and the infant was successfully rescued and is safe. All suspects are currently in custody while investigation continues,” SP Edafe said. Authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend other accomplices linked to the sale.

In a separate operation, the Delta State Police Command, through the Eagle Net Special Squad in Ughelli, arrested Lydia Osanebi, 67, for producing and repackaging adulterated dry gin using toxic chemicals including methanol and formalin.

Investigators recovered over 60 litres of counterfeit gin and materials used for illicit packaging. Methanol, one of the substances, poses severe health risks including blindness, organ failure, and death.

Additionally, operatives of the CP–Special Assignment Team arrested Felix Africa, 44, in Sapele for alleged possession and trafficking of Indian hemp. Police recovered eight bags of the substance during the raid.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, public health, and property.

He urged residents to avoid illegal activities, steer clear of unregulated products, and report suspicious persons or activities through local police stations or the control room at 0803 668 4974.
