Tributes flood in after Macclesfield FC forward Ethan McLeod dies at 21 in a road accident returning from an away match

Tributes have continued to pour in following the death of Macclesfield FC forward Ethan McLeod, who died in a road accident while returning from an away fixture, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Macclesfield FC said the 21-year-old forward was involved in a crash on the M1 on Tuesday night after travelling back from Bedford Town.

“With the heaviest of hearts, Macclesfield FC can confirm the passing of 21-year-old forward Ethan McLeod,” the club said.

“Ethan was an incredibly talented and well-respected member of our First Team Squad, who had his whole life ahead of him. His infectious personality endeared him to everyone he met.”

The club highlighted McLeod’s professionalism, commitment, and positive influence on teammates, describing his legacy as enduring.

“Ethan will live in our hearts and minds forevermore, and his unique smile that mesmerised us all will never be forgotten,” the statement added.

Macclesfield extended condolences to McLeod’s family and friends, pledging support to those affected by the tragedy.

His parent club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, also mourned his passing. “We are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Ethan McLeod at the age of 21. Ethan joined Wolves Academy at seven-years-old and signed professional terms before leaving in September 2024. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone at Macclesfield,” the club said.

A minute’s silence will be observed at Wolves’ next first-team fixture against Brentford.

Messages of sympathy have also come from across English football.

The English Premier League, Manchester City, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion, and Bedford Town FC all expressed condolences, with clubs pausing activities and holding moments of silence in McLeod’s memory.

This follows a series of tragic losses in football, including Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in July and West Ham striker Michail Antonio’s near-fatal crash in March 2025.
