Jigawa fake dollar arrest sees police apprehend Lawan Isa with 56 counterfeit $100 bills at Ringim market. Investigation ongoing by SCID Dutse

Jigawa fake dollar arrest has taken a dramatic turn following the arrest of a 33-year-old man, Lawan Isa, in possession of 56 fake $100 notes at Gidan Lage Market in Ringim Local Government Area.

Confirming the arrest, Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, told our correspondent that the operation took place on 5th October 2025, after officers acted on credible intelligence.

“Operatives attached to Gidan Lage Outstation under Ringim Division arrested one Lawan Isa, male, aged 33, of Dorayi Karama in Kano State, at Gidan Lage Market. He was found with suspected counterfeit dollars,” Adam said.

In addition to the counterfeit currency, four Android phones and a keypad handset were seized from the suspect.

Isa was reportedly unable to offer any credible explanation for the foreign notes in his possession.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a full probe.

SP Adam emphasised that the arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the command to tackle economic crimes and maintain security across the state.

“The circulation of counterfeit currency is a serious offence that threatens financial trust and public safety,” he added. “We urge citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.”

This development comes as counterfeit currency continues to plague parts of northern Nigeria, including Jigawa.

In a separate crackdown reported earlier by PUNCH Online, police apprehended 13 individuals posing as currency exchangers, who were defrauding unsuspecting victims through fake dollar transactions.

Recovered items in that bust included bundles of counterfeit $100 notes, fake ₦1,000 bills, and even improvised Central Bank currency boxes used to trick victims.

The police have warned that such scams not only rob people of their money but also fuel wider criminal networks, undermining economic and social stability.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that criminals find no refuge in Jigawa State.
