Slot Netherlands job decision explained as the former Liverpool coach says he prefers daily club football over managing the Dutch national team

Arne Slot, the 47-year-old former Liverpool head coach, has explained in the Netherlands on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, why he chose not to continue talks with the Royal Dutch Football Association over becoming the country’s next manager, saying his preference remains working with a club side every day.

Slot was approached about succeeding Ronald Koeman, who left the Netherlands post after the country’s disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign. The former Feyenoord coach held exploratory discussions with the KNVB but decided against progressing to formal negotiations.

His decision came amid reports that talks had broken down over salary and the length of a proposed contract. Slot has firmly rejected that account.

“Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration,” Slot said.

“That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks.”

Slot instead pointed to a footballing consideration that has shaped his decision: the opportunity to work with players on a daily basis.

“At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day,” he said. “Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.”

The distinction is important. A national-team manager has relatively little contact time with players outside international windows, while a club coach works with the squad throughout the season, overseeing training, tactical development and match preparation on a near-daily basis.

Slot said that preference ultimately persuaded him not to proceed.

“And (this is) why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like,” he added.

The decision does not appear to reflect any deterioration in Slot’s relationship with the KNVB or his feelings towards the national side.

The Dutchman spoke warmly about the federation and the discussions he had with its officials.

“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week,” Slot said.

“For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me.”

Slot’s position is particularly notable given that the Netherlands job has long been regarded as one of the most prestigious positions available to a Dutch coach.

The KNVB had reportedly regarded Slot as a leading option following Koeman’s departure. He had also been identified as a potential “dream candidate” in the early stages of the search, although reports indicated that he preferred to remain in club football.

His decision leaves the federation with a significant vacancy to fill as it prepares for the next international cycle.

Slot’s own club career has already taken him to the highest level.

He guided Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in the 2022-23 season before moving to Liverpool, where he won the Premier League in his first season in England. He subsequently left the Merseyside club at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

His success at Feyenoord helped establish him as one of the Netherlands’ leading coaching prospects and made him an obvious candidate whenever the national-team position became available.

There was therefore a natural expectation that Slot might eventually take charge of Oranje.

He has not ruled that possibility out.

“It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me,” he said.

That qualification leaves the door open for a future appointment, even if Slot is currently determined to continue his career in club football.

The KNVB’s search has now widened. Recent reports have linked former Portugal manager Roberto Martinez with the vacancy, although his representatives have indicated that formal talks had not yet taken place.

Martinez became available after leaving the Portugal job following the 2026 World Cup, with Jorge Jesus subsequently appointed as his successor.

The Spaniard would represent a significant departure from the KNVB’s traditional preference for Dutch coaches.

Reports suggest, however, that Martinez is open to hearing from the federation, even though differences over salary could make an agreement difficult.

For now, Slot’s immediate future remains in club football.

His decision is less a rejection of the Netherlands than a statement about where he believes he can do his best work at this stage of his career.

For a coach whose reputation has been built on intensive training-ground work and tactical development, the attraction of daily contact with players remains decisive.

The Netherlands will continue its search for a successor to Koeman, while Slot waits for the right club opportunity.

And, for now, the message from the former Liverpool coach is clear: managing his country remains an ambition, but not yet.
