Brilliant Footsteps electric vehicle stuns Nigeria as Sokoto students design and build BMT 1.0, showcasing youth-led innovation and sustainable mobility in Africa
Brilliant Footsteps students build electric vehicle in Sokoto. This has stunned observers across Nigeria, establishing a new benchmark for youth-led innovation.
Named BMT 1.0, the vehicle was fully designed and assembled by 15 graduating SS3 students—ten girls and five boys—at Brilliant Footsteps International Academy.
The achievement marks the first time a group of secondary school students in Northern Nigeria has independently developed a functioning electric car.
The BMT 1.0 includes fully integrated mechanical, electrical, and body systems, demonstrating the students’ capability to work as a professional engineering unit.
“This isn’t just a school project. It’s a message,” said Dr. Shadi Sabeh, Proprietor of the Academy, during the public unveiling of the car.
“It proves that with the right mindset and mentorship, Nigerian youth can reshape the future of African innovation—right from their classrooms.”
Powered by a Battery Management System (BMS), the vehicle requires just three to four hours of charging and can travel up to 30 kilometres per charge.
The students led every stage of development, from chassis design and welding to electrical wiring and software integration, receiving only external technical advice from Maglush Electrical Company.
Ahmed Sadi, the team leader, explained the group’s structure and workflow. “Everyone had a clear role, from frame welding to wiring, from integrating the battery system to running initial test drives. We learned by doing,” he said.
Aisha Ahmed, another lead contributor, highlighted the broader impact.
This isn’t just a school project. It’s a message.
“This car shows that innovation can happen in places often overlooked. If scaled and improved, this project could help reduce Nigeria’s overdependence on imported vehicles and promote sustainable mobility.”
She stressed the urgency for Africa to become creators in the green technology space. Her passion reflected the collective drive of the student team to prove that talent, when given the opportunity, can thrive anywhere.
Dr. Sabeh explained that the initiative is part of the Academy’s mission to provide real-world, functional education.
“We are shifting from theory-heavy teaching to real-world, problem-solving skills. We want to raise students who don’t just learn but build, innovate, and lead.”
He urged public and private stakeholders to invest in education innovation hubs across Nigeria.
“Despite being situated in a region often grappling with limited infrastructure, scarce funding, and minimal access to advanced technology, these young innovators have showcased what is possible when talent meets opportunity,” he said.
Sabeh added, “It’s not happening in Tokyo or China or Japan. It’s happening right here, in Sokoto.”
The school has already conducted a successful live test drive of the BMT 1.0, impressing media representatives and special guests in attendance.
Plans are underway to refine the vehicle’s design and explore potential partnerships for commercial production.
“As the BMT 1.0 rolls forward, it carries more than students—it carries the hopes of a continent ready to engineer its own future,” said Dr. Sabeh.

Beyond the vehicle itself, the project has ignited national conversations about what is possible when young minds are empowered with tools, mentorship, and vision.
