Nigeria Flood Alert issued as 9 northern states face heavy rainfall risk between August 25–29, 2025, with communities urged to stay vigilant

Nigeria Flood Alert has been issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center, placing nine northern states on red alert for possible flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.

The warning, signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, cautioned that heavy rainfall may trigger flooding across vulnerable communities.

According to the circular, the states at risk include Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Borno. Stakeholders have been urged to remain vigilant, monitor the situation, and report incidents promptly.

Adamawa and Katsina recorded the highest number of flagged towns. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo were listed, while in Katsina, Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa were placed under close watch.

Other vulnerable locations include Gwaram in Jigawa, Nafada in Gombe, Ngala in Borno, Sumaila in Kano, Anka in Zamfara, and Makira in Sokoto. Bauchi State also has two towns—Azare and Jama’are—under heightened surveillance.

The Center had earlier raised alerts across seven northern states, warning floodplain communities along the River Niger to evacuate due to rising water levels.
