Airtel Africa Digital Future depends on AI, data centres, and industry collaboration to drive the continent’s telecom revolution, says CEO Sunil Taldar

Airtel Africa Digital Future is being shaped by critical investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), data centres, and robust industry collaboration, according to Airtel Africa’s CEO, Sunil Taldar.

Speaking at the MWC25 conference in Kigali, Mr Taldar highlighted that the continent’s next telecom revolution will move beyond merely connecting people to enabling meaningful value creation through digital technologies.

“Africa’s digital decade has begun,” Taldar stated, emphasising that the continent, having leapfrogged into mobile telephony, is poised for another leap where every byte of data drives productivity and prosperity.

He underlined the necessity of partnerships involving operators, technology manufacturers, regulators, investors, tax regimes, and the continent’s young innovators.

“Together we can build a continent where data is processed locally, talent nurtured nationally, and innovation scaled globally.”

Central to this vision is the deployment of AI to create smarter, greener networks, enhance customer experience, and secure mobile money transactions.

Equally vital is the development of interconnected data centres linked by high-capacity fibre to ensure inclusive digital access, even in remote areas.

Airtel Africa is investing heavily in data centre hubs in Nigeria and Kenya, reinforcing its commitment to supporting Africa’s digital infrastructure.

AI is already being integrated into its operations for functions such as SMS spam detection, customer onboarding, fraud prevention in mobile money, and energy optimisation at sites.

The MWC25 event, hosted annually in Kigali, Rwanda, convenes industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to explore how connectivity and digital technologies are accelerating Africa’s transformation.

Opening the event, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame remarked on Africa’s rapid shift to a mobile-driven economy.

He called for collaboration across governments, the private sector, and partners to harmonise policies and foster an environment conducive to innovation, enabling secure cross-border data and payment systems.

“The future we must build is an Africa that is bold, connected and competitive,” Kagame concluded.
