Ogun traditional rulers urged to uphold integrity, humility, and good governance during orientation for 72 newly installed Obas in the state

Ogun traditional rulers have been urged to lead with humility, uphold integrity, and show a strong commitment to promoting good governance at the grassroots.

The call was made by Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Toyin Taiwo, during an orientation workshop for 72 newly installed royal fathers in Abeokuta.

Speaking on the theme, “Traditional Rulers: The Harbingers of Good Governance,” Governor Abiodun emphasised that Obas remain first responders in disputes and are vital custodians of peace and justice.

“Obas are the moral compasses of communities and the living embodiments of the values, customs, and collective aspirations of the people,” he said.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, explained that the training was part of resolutions from earlier meetings of the Ogun State Council of Obas.

The programme equips newly installed traditional rulers with the skills to navigate the challenges of authority in today’s society.

Dr Rotimiolu Akinlesi, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, stressed that capacity building for royal fathers remains a priority to accelerate the state’s development.

Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, commended the government for organising the workshop, urging participants to use the training to enhance leadership skills and progress within their kingdoms.

A communiqué issued at the end of the one-day event noted that the workshop included 11 First Class Obas, 17 Part II Obas, and 44 coronets from the four traditional councils.

It reaffirmed the pivotal role of traditional rulers in governance, social order, and cultural identity, highlighting the need for humility, vision, and a balance between tradition and modernisation.

The workshop underlined that Ogun traditional rulers are not only cultural icons but also essential partners in fostering good governance and community development across the state.
