Five individuals in Jigawa State convicted for illegal tree felling under the Climate Change Law face one-year imprisonment or N20,000 fine, with confiscated timber forfeited

The Jigawa State Environmental Court in Dutse has convicted five individuals for illegally cutting down trees, violating the Jigawa State Climate Change Law No. 19 of 2019.

The convicts Sale Yahaya, Sani Wada, Idris Haladu, Dauda Harisu, and Mutari Musa  are residents of Andaza Town and Kwarin Makera Village in Dutse and Kiyawa local government areas.

Each was sentenced to one year imprisonment, with the option to pay a N20,000 fine instead.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of all timber logs recovered, to be disposed of after the statutory appeal period.

The judgment sends a strong message against deforestation and reflects Jigawa State Government’s commitment to protecting natural resources and preserving the ecosystem.

Magistrate Hassan Yau, who presided over the case, emphasized adherence to environmental laws to safeguard the state’s natural heritage for future generations.
