MAUTH in Yola successfully separates conjoined twins in a three-hour surgery, marking its sixth such procedure and highlighting local paediatric expertise

The Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, has successfully separated conjoined twins, marking the sixth such procedure in the history of the hospital.

The four-month-old twin boys underwent the three-hour surgery on Monday afternoon. The operation was led by Professor Abubakar Auwal, a paediatric surgery expert, who confirmed the twins were joined at the abdominal region and were safely separated.

“In this hospital, this is the sixth separation, but the team has conducted two additional surgeries in Maiduguri,” Professor Auwal said, referring to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

MAUTH, established as a Federal Medical Centre in 1998 and upgraded to a teaching hospital in 2022, serves as a centre of healthcare excellence and provides practical training for Modibbo Adama University medical students.

Professor Auwal highlighted that MAUTH is equipped to handle critical paediatric cases locally, offering world-class care without the need for patients to travel abroad.

The surgery was conducted free of charge, supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), which finances paediatric surgery resources at the hospital.

Dr Salihu Bakari, TETFund Director for the Centre for Excellence, said: “This is exactly why the centre was established – to provide ordinary people with world-class medical attention locally.”

The Chief Medical Director of MAUTH, Professor Adamu Bakari, commended the medical team and staff for the successful operation.

He emphasised the hospital’s role as a TETFund-designated centre for excellent paediatric surgery, attracting patients nationwide for complex procedures such as conjoined twin separations.

Shuaibu Jibir, father of the twins from Taraba State, expressed gratitude to the medical team, revealing that his wife, the twins’ mother, tragically passed away shortly after giving birth.
