NANS urges probe into University of Ilesa fee allegations, citing questionable charges, poor services and concerns over transparency

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has called on the Osun State Government to investigate University of Ilesa fee allegations, following complaints by students over what they described as questionable financial charges and administrative practices within the institution.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the zone’s coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, who stressed that the concerns raised by students required urgent government attention to ensure accountability and protect student welfare.

Adeyemo alleged that students were subjected to irregular financial demands, including a ₦25,000 entrepreneurial training fee which, according to the association, had not been delivered.

He also cited a ₦5,000 per session charge for access to the university’s online portal, which he claimed remains unreliable despite repeated payments.

He described the situation as troubling, noting that the pattern of charges raises questions about transparency and the quality of services being provided to students.

According to him, many students continue to experience difficulties accessing essential digital services expected to support academic activities.

Adeyemo further stated that inadequate ICT infrastructure, including limited Wi-Fi availability, has compounded the challenges faced by students.

He added that concerns have also emerged over the absence of an active student union and the broader learning environment within the institution.

The student body urged the state government to review the situation and take appropriate measures where necessary, emphasising the need for improved governance and accountability in tertiary institutions.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the university has drawn wider attention in recent weeks. Reports previously emerged regarding the alleged arrest of a graduate of the University of Ilesa during a protest over mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The incident prompted reactions from the National Association of University Students (NAUS), which condemned the arrest and alleged maltreatment of the graduate.

However, the university management dismissed those claims, describing them as inaccurate and misleading, and noting that the institution had yet to graduate its first set of students since its establishment in 2023.

As scrutiny continues, stakeholders are calling for clarity, transparency and improved communication between the university authorities and students to prevent further escalation of tensions.
