Mbappé broke the deadlock in the first half with a deflected strike, registering his first league goal since early February in a timely return to form.

Vinícius Júnior doubled the lead early in the second half with a powerful long-range effort, giving Madrid control of the contest and a crucial cushion.

Alavés responded late through Toni Martínez in stoppage time, but the comeback proved too late to deny the visitors a vital win.

The result ended a two-match winless run in La Liga for Madrid and reduced the gap to leaders FC Barcelona to six points, keeping the title race alive.

Barcelona are scheduled to face Celta Vigo on Wednesday, a fixture that could further shape the top of the table.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Real Betis produced a comeback win over Girona, while Athletic Club secured a narrow victory against Osasuna.

Mallorca and Valencia also shared the points in a 1-1 draw, adding to a busy midweek round of Spanish top-flight action.
