Omotayo transfer to Zulte Waregem sees the 18-year-old Nigerian winger leave Ikorodu City after interest from Barcelona and other European clubs
Zulte Waregem have completed the signing of 18-year-old Nigerian winger Maliq Musa Omotayo from Ikorodu City, securing the teenager’s move to Belgium on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, after he passed a medical and impressed during a trial with the Belgian Pro League club.
The transfer comes after Zulte Waregem moved ahead of reported interest from several European clubs, including Barcelona, who had planned to assess the young winger during trials this summer.
Omotayo became eligible to sign a professional contract in Europe after turning 18 on Monday, August 17.
The timing allowed Zulte Waregem to move swiftly to complete an agreement for a player the club had already been monitoring in Nigeria.
According to Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Omotayo successfully completed his medical before the Belgian club finalised the deal.
The teenager’s emergence has been one of the encouraging stories from Ikorodu City’s recent development programme.
Omotayo broke into the Lagos club’s senior side during the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season after developing at Lagos-based Imperial FC in The Creative Championship.
Omotayo made nine NPFL appearances during the campaign, starting six matches. He scored once and provided one assist, while averaging 71.4 minutes per appearance.
His contribution extended beyond his league statistics. Omotayo was also involved in Ikorodu City’s run to the President Federation Cup final, giving European scouts further opportunities to assess his pace, attacking instincts and work rate.
Zulte Waregem’s interest developed into a more direct opportunity when the club invited Omotayo to Belgium for a trial.
His performances during the assessment convinced the coaching staff that he was worth pursuing, leading to the agreement completed after his medical.
Barcelona’s interest adds an intriguing dimension to the move, although the Catalan club did not complete a deal for the teenager.
Zulte Waregem’s decision to act quickly has ultimately secured Omotayo’s next step in European football.
The Belgian club’s approach also offers Omotayo a development pathway rather than immediate pressure to establish himself at senior level.
He is expected to begin with Jong Essevee, Zulte Waregem’s Under-23 side, where he can become accustomed to Belgian football and continue developing before competing for a place in the senior squad.
For Ikorodu City, Omotayo’s departure represents another indication of the potential within Nigeria’s domestic game to produce young players capable of attracting attention from European clubs.
The winger’s progression is particularly notable because his senior breakthrough came only during the previous NPFL season.
His move to Belgium now gives him the opportunity to develop within a different footballing environment while continuing the promising trajectory that began in Lagos.
Zulte Waregem have a history of developing young players and providing opportunities for emerging talent, making the move a potentially important stage in Omotayo’s career.
The immediate challenge will be adapting to the demands of Belgian football, including the physical and tactical differences between the NPFL and European competition. Jong Essevee should provide Omotayo with the space to make that transition gradually.
For an 18-year-old who only recently established himself in Nigeria’s top flight, the move represents a significant opportunity.
The reported interest from Barcelona may have attracted attention, but it is Zulte Waregem who have ultimately secured the promising Nigerian winger.
Omotayo now begins a new chapter in Belgium, with the next stage of his development likely to determine whether his impressive rise in Nigerian football can translate into a sustained career in Europe.
