Kelechi Iheanacho’s Celtic transfer marks a thrilling new chapter for the Super Eagles striker, who has verbally agreed to join the Scottish Premiership champions after terminating his contract with Sevilla, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 28-year-old forward, now a free agent, is set to reunite with former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers in Glasgow.

Sevilla announced the mutual termination of Iheanacho’s contract, originally set to run until June 2026, on Monday, September 1, 2025.

“Sevilla FC and Iheanacho have reached an agreement to terminate the striker’s contract. The club wishes to thank Iheanacho for his efforts and extends its best wishes for his future,” the LaLiga club stated.

Sports journalist George Tsarouchas confirmed on X that the Iheanacho Celtic transfer is on track, stating, “Kelechi Iheanacho has reached a verbal agreement to sign for Celtic FC after terminating his contract with Sevilla FC.”

However, Turkish club Samsunspor remains in the race, submitting a late offer to sway the striker.

Nigerian broadcast journalist Onyebuchi Onokala added that Celtic had been in talks with Sevilla before the contract termination, offering Iheanacho a two-year deal.

“Celtic were in negotiations with Sevilla for Kelechi Iheanacho before his contract was mutually terminated, and now they have sent him a contract of 2 years as a free agent,” Onokala posted on X.

Two Turkish clubs also made offers, but personal terms stalled those moves.

Iheanacho’s time at Sevilla was underwhelming, with only 11 appearances and three goals, primarily in the Copa del Rey.

A loan spell at Middlesbrough in the 2024/25 season yielded one goal and two assists in 15 games.

Deemed surplus by Sevilla’s sporting director Víctor Orta, Iheanacho’s exit aligned with the club’s late transfer activity, including signings like Alexis Sánchez.

Celtic, reeling from Adam Idah’s £7m move to Swansea City, see the Iheanacho Celtic transfer as a vital boost for their attack.

Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph noted that the deal could “pave the way to a permanent switch,” with Celtic able to finalize it outside the transfer window due to Iheanacho’s free-agent status.

With 58 caps for Nigeria and an FA Cup title from his Leicester days, Iheanacho brings experience and flair to Celtic’s squad.
