Nigeria Customs fake news warning urges Nigerians to ignore misleading messages and rely on verified platforms for accurate updates

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has cautioned Nigerians against the spread of false information circulating on social media, describing such claims as misleading and unauthorised, and stressing that they did not originate from the Service.

In a statement shared via its official X account on Monday, the agency issued a Nigeria Customs fake news warning, urging members of the public to disregard unverified messages and depend solely on updates released through its verified communication channels.

The Service emphasised that its official platforms remain the most reliable source of accurate information regarding its operations, policies, and announcements.

It noted that misinformation can easily mislead the public and distort understanding of its activities.

Officials further warned that the circulation of false content could fuel confusion, undermine public confidence, and create unnecessary tension around government institutions.

The agency called on Nigerians to exercise caution before sharing information online, particularly content relating to customs procedures, duties, and enforcement actions.

The statement also encouraged the public to verify all information through the Service’s official website and verified social media handles before dissemination.

According to the NCS, it regularly issues clarifications to counter misleading reports and correct false narratives that may arise online.

In recent times, fake messages relating to customs duties and operational directives have been widely shared across digital platforms, sometimes causing panic among citizens and stakeholders.

The agency’s latest advisory reflects ongoing efforts to curb the spread of misinformation in Nigeria’s online space.
