Wolfsburg confirms the Denmark midfielder will continue rehabilitation at home following medical discussions with club officials

German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg has confirmed that Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen will begin an individual rehabilitation programme in his home country after discussions between the experienced playmaker and the club’s Managing Director, Dieter Hecking.

The decision, announced by Wolfsburg on Thursday through its verified X account, will allow the 34-year-old to continue his recovery in Denmark while remaining under close medical supervision and in regular contact with the club.

“Christian Eriksen will soon begin an individual rehabilitation programme. After a conversation with VfL managing director Dieter Hecking, it was decided that the 34-year-old will complete this in his home country of Denmark,” the club said.

“Wolfsburg is in regular contact with Christian as well as the treating physicians. For the course of his rehabilitation, we continue to wish Christian all the best.”

The latest phase of the Christian Eriksen recovery follows the alarming incident during Denmark’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when the midfielder suddenly collapsed on the pitch, prompting an immediate suspension of the game as medical personnel rushed to his aid.

Eriksen was stretchered from the field before being taken to hospital, where he later regained consciousness and was reported to be in a stable condition.

The incident sent shockwaves through the football community, with teammates, opponents and supporters united in expressing concern for one of the sport’s most respected figures.

In the hours that followed, the Danish Football Association confirmed that Eriksen was recovering under medical supervision.

Eriksen has overcome significant adversity before. In 2021, the Danish international suffered a cardiac arrest during a UEFA European Championship match against Finland before making a remarkable return to professional football after receiving an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

His successful comeback with Brentford paved the way for a move to Manchester United, where he re-established himself at the highest level before joining Wolfsburg.

Widely regarded as one of Denmark’s finest midfielders, Eriksen has built a distinguished career featuring spells with Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford, Manchester United and now Wolfsburg.

With more than 140 international appearances, he remains one of the most accomplished players in Danish football history.
