Nigerian singer Simi faces online backlash after TikToker Mirabel admits her viral rape claim was false, sparking debate on sexual violence and mental health

Nigerian singer Simi has faced widespread criticism on social media after a TikToker, identified as Mirabel, admitted that her widely circulated rape allegation was false.

The controversy began on February 18 when a video emerged on TikTok, in which Mirabel claimed she had been raped and injured inside her home.

The post quickly went viral, triggering outrage and intense public debate. While many initially supported Mirabel, others questioned the authenticity of her claims, accusing her of seeking attention.

Amid the online discourse, Simi posted on X urging men to hold others accountable and speaking against rape culture.

Her comments were interpreted by some as dismissing false allegations, prompting a wave of backlash. Critics resurfaced an old tweet from 2016 and circulated a fake apology screenshot, further fuelling the debate.

Simi responded, emphasising that sexual violence against women remains pervasive and that false claims should not be used to silence real victims.

“Almost every woman I know personally has been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives,” she wrote, adding that those who lie should face consequences but should not overshadow the broader conversation about abuse.

The case took a new turn when social media activist VeryDarkMan revealed that Mirabel had admitted over the phone that the allegation was fabricated.

Mirabel disclosed that she is an 18-year-old orphan, identifies as a lesbian, struggles with alcohol and codeine addiction, and engages in self-harm as a coping mechanism.

VeryDarkMan appealed to the public for forgiveness and urged awareness of mental health challenges, noting that arrangements were underway to place Mirabel in a rehabilitation centre.

The matter has now been transferred to Ogun State for further investigation.

The incident has reignited discussions online about sexual violence, accountability, and the mental health issues behind viral social media controversies, highlighting the delicate balance between protecting victims and addressing false claims.
