TESCOM teacher transformation: Lagos State strengthens digital and innovative skills for educators to drive 21st-century learning and classroom excellence

The Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has reaffirmed its commitment to equipping teachers with the skills needed to foster innovation and excellence in classrooms of the future.

TESCOM Chairman Victoria Peregrino told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that teacher transformation is central to safeguarding Lagos State’s educational future and broader socio-economic development.

“At TESCOM, we are deliberately retooling our teachers with digital competence, innovative pedagogy, and learner-centred methodologies essential for 21st-century education,” Peregrino said.

Structured Capacity-Building Initiatives

The commission has launched frameworks targeting technology integration, competency-based instruction, adaptive teaching models, and continuous professional development across secondary schools.

Teachers receive practical training on virtual learning platforms, smart assessment systems, data analytics, and technology-enabled classroom management tools.

“Digital learning is no longer optional; it is the foundation of relevant education in today’s interconnected economy,” Peregrino added.

The initiatives also set measurable benchmarks for teacher readiness and infrastructure expansion, ensuring classrooms align with global standards.

Pedagogical Shifts for 21st-Century Skills

Beyond technology, TESCOM is driving a broader pedagogical shift.

Teachers are trained to cultivate critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, ethical leadership, and resilience in students skills crucial for competing on a global stage.

Strategic partnerships with private sector leaders and development organisations are strengthening mentorship programs, aligning curricula with industry needs, and supporting sustainable teacher upskilling.

“We are not pursuing reform for rhetoric, but for measurable impact,” Peregrino said.
