Man United are reportedly considering a fine for Lisandro Martínez after he criticised the club’s leadership and summer transfer recruitment
Manchester United are reportedly considering fining defender Lisandro Martínez after he publicly criticised the club’s leadership following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.
According to reports, the club is assessing possible disciplinary action against the Argentina international over comments in which he questioned United’s summer recruitment strategy and called for greater investment in the squad.
The reports, attributed to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell, suggest that a fine is being viewed as a likely outcome, although the club’s final decision was not confirmed in the report.
Martínez’s remarks have also drawn attention because he reportedly shares concerns about the club’s direction with other members of the dressing room.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the defeat to Atlético Madrid, Martínez expressed frustration with United’s recruitment and called on the club’s leadership to provide the manager with more players capable of competing at the highest level.
“We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well,” he said.
The defender added that he expected greater investment and specifically questioned the role of technical director Jason Wilcox.
“I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director,” Martínez said.
He also argued that criticism should not be directed solely at the manager and players when assessing the club’s performances.
“Tonight it is easy to blame the coach, easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?” he added.
Martínez reportedly reinforced his position in a subsequent interview, insisting that he would not remain silent about what he considers shortcomings within the club.
His comments have fuelled discussion about United’s transfer strategy and the relationship between players and the club’s leadership.
Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano also reported on Wednesday that Martínez was not the only player at the club who shared concerns about the situation at Old Trafford.
The reported possibility of a fine comes amid wider questions about United’s recruitment decisions and their ability to build a squad capable of competing consistently.
The defender’s future at Manchester United has also become a talking point.
According to the report, Martínez’s contract runs until June 2027, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further year, until 2028.
The report suggested that the prospect of him agreeing to a longer-term deal was remote, although no official announcement regarding his future was cited.
United are scheduled to face Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday as they look to respond to their recent defeat.
For now, the potential disciplinary action against Martínez remains a developing issue, with the club’s reported consideration of a fine adding another dimension to the debate over United’s leadership, recruitment and sporting direction.
