Anambra police arrested a man for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death over suspected infidelity in Ekwulobia; suspect in custody

The Anambra Police Command has arrested 26-year-old Chibuike Anikpe over the alleged murder of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Ogochukwu Mmadubugwu, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area, the state’s police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed on Sunday.

Operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka detained Anikpe on January 7 following the December 9, 2025 incident.

Contrary to circulating rumours, Ikenga clarified that the crime was not linked to any financial disputes with other persons.

During interrogation, Anikpe reportedly confessed to stabbing Mmadubugwu in the neck with a knife, claiming the act stemmed from suspicions of infidelity.

He further said that his substantial financial investment in the victim had left him bankrupt and emotionally distressed, contributing to the fatal attack.

Ikenga added that the suspect attempted to mislead authorities by leaving a false letter suggesting he had been kidnapped by creditors.

Investigators have visited the morgue where the victim’s body was deposited as part of ongoing inquiries.

“The Command urges the public to resolve disputes lawfully and peacefully, and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies,” Ikenga said.

Anikpe will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, authorities confirmed.
