Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS, Olajide Babatunde, disclosed the funding on Monday during a press briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, noting that the amount represents Lagos State’s counterpart contribution to ongoing discussions with international development partners.

Olajide Babatunde stressed that Makoko’s redevelopment forms part of the state’s broader urban regeneration initiatives, which have been ongoing since 2019 and expanded under the current administration.

He said the community’s redevelopment must be understood within the framework of safety, environmental responsibility, and sustainable urban planning.

Makoko has gained attention after the state demolished several waterfront structures, citing safety risks and buildings located beneath high-tension power lines.

The demolitions sparked protests from residents and civil society groups who accused authorities of forced evictions without proper notice or resettlement.

Babatunde clarified that the government’s approach is not punitive or gentrifying, emphasising that the $2 million funding will enhance living conditions, sanitation, infrastructure, and social amenities through collaboration with the United Nations and other development partners.

He explained that earlier plans for shoreline extension were abandoned due to technical and environmental concerns, with the “Water Cities” model now approved as the preferred redevelopment strategy.

The project will focus on vertical development within Makoko’s existing footprint, with any removals limited strictly to high-tension corridors to safeguard lives and ensure safety.

“The government will continue to engage communities, uphold safety standards, compensate where required, and implement regeneration plans that protect residents and create sustainable, well-planned environments,” Babatunde said.

The Director of Public Health at the state Ministry of Health, Dr Sadique Abubakar, disclosed the measures in an interview with PUNCH Online on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following a meeting to assess the Ebola situation and identify necessary preventive actions.

Abubakar said the government was working to improve the readiness of health facilities while educating residents about Ebola prevention and the importance of strict infection prevention and control practices.

“We have already identified the necessary actions that we will continue to take. Part of them is strengthening facility readiness and awareness,” he said.

He explained that community sensitisation remained central to the state’s preparedness strategy, with health officials developing messages to inform the public about the disease and ways to reduce the risk of transmission.

“We are currently developing messages to distribute across various media platforms. We will also engage the media in sensitising the community through radio, television and other channels,” Abubakar said.

The government is also planning awareness campaigns at key entry points, including motor parks and railway stations, to reach travellers and other members of the public with relevant health information.

According to the director, these efforts form part of broader preparations to ensure Kaduna can respond effectively to a potential public health emergency.

Abubakar added that the Ministry of Health would issue a public health advisory to guide residents on precautions and other relevant information concerning Ebola.

“Usually, when we have issues of public health concern, we release public health advisories,” he said.

He assured residents that the government would continue reviewing its preparedness plans and provide updates as additional measures were developed.
